Part of the sixth generation of the ever-popular Golf, and sharing more than a few components with the Audi S3, the R became the new powerhouse of the Volkswagen lineup in 2010. In doing so, it managed to perform the impressive double-whammy of surpassing its range-topping R32 predecessors in every performance metric and exceeding the lofty expectations of the motoring press.

At a time when manufacturers were habitually downsizing their engines, Volkswagen replaced the R32’s 3.2-liter powerplant with their tried-and-tested turbocharged 2.0-liter -- without sacrificing performance. With boost raised to an astonishing 17 psi, the Golf R produced an incredible 270 bhp and 258 ft-lbs of torque. Despite being down two cylinders, it could sprint to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds!

Power is not the only criteria for an R badge, however -- handling is equally important. That’s why Volkswagen raided the corporate parts bin to fit an Audi-derived four-wheel-drive system to the Golf R, ensuring superior traction on any road surface.
