The 2012 IndyCar, with the ‘DW12’ chassis at its core, made its competitive debut in the first race of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season at St. Petersburg, Florida, on March 25. Chip Ganassi Racing campaigned five cars (#9, #10, #38, #50, #83) during the fifteen-race season, recording three wins, seven second-place finishes, and two thirds.
The 2012 car, which could be constructed in both oval and road course configurations, was originally intended to sport bodywork and ‘aero kits’ developed by multiple third-party manufacturers, but this move was deferred until 2013 with all team owners deciding instead to use Dallara-made body kits. That left the 2.2-liter V6 turbocharged engine, supplied by one of Lotus, Honda, or Chevrolet, as the only variable amongst the teams*. Chip Ganassi Racing engines were supplied by Honda.
During the season, oval-spec cars would race at Indianapolis, Texas, Milwaukee, Iowa, and Auto Club Speedway while road course-spec cars would head to St Petersburg, Barber Motorsports Park, Long Beach, Sao Paulo, Detroit, Toronto, Edmonton, Mid-Ohio, Sonoma, and Baltimore.
