When it was originally introduced in 2005 to contest the brand new series bearing its name, the Formula Renault 3.5 was billed by the French manufacturer as the ideal test bed for drivers with ambitions of entering top-level open-wheel racing.

The powerful single-seater certainly featured many of the bells and whistles previously only found on mega-bucks Formula One racers, including a semi-automatic sequential-shift gearbox, steering-mounted paddle shifters, and carbon brakes.

By the time this second-generation car arrived in 2008, it also sported a 480-bhp Renault-badged Nissan V6 beneath its Dallara-built carbon-fiber monocoque, while a series of aerodynamic tweaks during the subsequent three years succeeded in improving its performance still further, reducing drag and increasing downforce.

The net result by 2011 was a car that went a long way to backing Renault’s proud boasts that the Formula Renault 3.5 Series represented the ultimate feeder series to F1 and IndyCar—boasts that were supported by a list of alumni including IndyCar ace Will Power and F1 champs Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel.
