Based on the third-generation Renault Megane, the Megane Renaultsport 250 debuted at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show having been transformed from mild-mannered runabout to snarling hot hatch by the famous French marque’s gifted motorsports division at their Dieppe HQ.
As with all Renaultsport creations, the 250 is much, much more than the sum of its parts. Visually, its extended sills, wide arches, elongated spoiler and rear diffuser with central exhaust immediately remove it from its middle-of-the-road sibling, but that’s not where the differences end.
At its heart lies a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine capable of churning out 247 bhp, all of which is channeled to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. What’s more, thanks to its power-to-weight ratio of 178 bhp-per-tonne, the Renaultsport 250 can reach 0-60 mph in just 6 seconds before maxing out at 156 mph—a speed that, when allied with the car’s vice-like grip and spot-on handling, can creep up on you in the time it takes to utter its mouthful of a moniker.
