One of the world's premier motorsport facilities, Silverstone plays host to a long list of prestigious series including, most notably, Formula One. Originally the site of a World War II airfield, it is located on the border of the English counties of Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire.
Silverstone was first raced on in 1947 and, a year later, held its first British Grand Prix—an event it has hosted exclusively since 1987. The modern circuit can accommodate five different layouts, with the recently-completed 3.67-mile, 18-turn "New Grand Prix Circuit" replacing the 3.19-mile, 17-turn "Bridge Grand Prix Circuit" as its primary configuration in 2010. The renowned venue also hosts GT1 World Championship, British Touring Car Championship, World Endurance Championship, MotoGP, British Superbike Championship, and European Le Mans Series races.
